Tuesday morning dawned clear and gorgeous. (Have I mentioned how early the sun rises in Downeast Maine?! It's EARLY!) After breakfast and getting cleaned up, we once again clamored into our cars and headed off to Eastport, Maine, another coastal town on the Canadian border. We explored their lovely galleries (they had some beautiful ones!), ate lunch at various restaurants (some of us were a little nervous about the famous lobster shack that was described again and again as "VERY fishy..."), and then met at the docks. We were about to embark on one of the highlights of our vacation: a whale watch on a beautiful three-sailed schooner.
We were lucky to have an amazing naturalist on board. Her first spot was these Razorbills hanging out in the water as we left the dock.
And then the whales began... we saw an incredible number of Minkes. They were beautiful!
We were also treated to lots of delightful porpoise sightings, but they were too fast as they leapt and played for us to catch with our camera. We did decide to take advantage of the gorgeous day for a rare family photo. Some day will get one with all four of us looking at the camera!
And of course there were many seals. The harbor seal below followed near us for awhile, playing and diving much to the girls' amusement.
As we passed near the Canadian coast, we were treated to an incredible sighting of America's national bird- a beautiful Bald Eagle.
Another gorgeous lighthouse.
Everyone was fascinated by this grey seal eating a halibut. As we watched him devour his lunch, the halibut looked nearly as big as him.
After nearly three hours at sea, the girls were feeling a little sleepy and needing some rest time with their uncles.
Sadly, it wasn't windy enough for us be under full sail, but it was still felt like a majestic voyage to Maia and Cec.
We were all tired and happy after the big adventure. More adventures were in store for the evening, though. We traded car keys with Nonni and Papa and sent Maia and Cecily off with them to have a sleepover at their house while Sasha and Perry said goodnight to their girls and sent them home with their grandparents. We all met up at The Pickled Herring for drinks and dinner.
It was Sasha and Perry's second wedding anniversary. We felt slightly bad for crashing their celebration, but it was a rare chance to have a night out with them. Sasha and I spent lots of time together during our childhood summers, but we've never had the chance as adults. We had a wonderful time! We told lots of great family stories, Sasha and I bonded over being raised by sisters while Sean and Perry commiserated, and there was much laughter. Happy Anniversary Sasha and Perry! We're so glad we had the chance to celebrate with you!!!
