Halloween is a very big deal in the town where we live. Maia was into it as a three-year-old... but she was positively beside herself with excitement as a four-year-old. Our carpool helped ratchet up her excitement, of course. Nothing like a few older kids with vivid memories to stoke the anticipation. Maia went through quite a few costume ideas before finally settling on Sleeping Beauty. (We thought Sleeping Beauty was going to lose out to Princess Padme, the Stars Wars obsession is alive and well with the kids on our street; but the pretty poofy pink and white dress won out in the end.) Cecily didn't have much choice in her costume- how could I not dress her as Tinkerbell?!

Once we were all ready, we met up with our neighborhood kids for trick-or-treating. There was some quick photo snapping, but the kids were positively jumping out of their skins to get going.

The highlight of our trick-or-treating was at a very historic home on a very historic street... the carriage house in back of the main house was staged as a pirate hang out (we couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a ship or a tavern). We ventured back to claim our booty (chocolate coins of course), and the pirates (clearly enjoying the beginnings of what looked to be a long evening) took a fancy to Sleeping Beauty. They tried to barter with her for her tiara.... but she was having none of it! (There was some additional bartering going on with Daddy for Mommy, who was a little unsure he wouldn't actually trade her, but that seemed to pass mostly over the heads of the kids.) After a minute or two of awkwardly avoiding looking at the pirates, Sleeping Beauty grabbed a handful of coins and hightailed it back to the street. We were all fading after that excitement, and headed home after a few more stops. Maia was delighted to count her candy, though she was tired enough to be content with waiting until the next day to try any. Cecily was enamored with the "presents" and kept showing them to us over and over again.
